Client: Tower Hamlets Crime Reduction
Services
Project: Cleveland Estate media intervention

The Brief
Tower Hamlets crime reduction services asked us
to assist with the mediation process between residents and police
on the Cleveland Estate in East London. The key objective of the project
was to facilitate a dialogue between young people, the police and
other members of the community, identifying causal issues for conflict
between generations as well as that between young people and the police.
The Approach
Traditional mediation had worked up to a point,
however the final goal of a contract between residents and the Police
was still a long way off. We decided to create an animated film to
reflect the events of the last 12 months through the eyes of the young
people. The anonymity of animation gave the youth a safe place to
air their views and the older residents and police could also contribute
to the narrative to dispel many of the misconceptions on both sides
of the argument.
Benefits
The film has given all the residents and
the police a chance to see the argument clearly from all angles. This
has resulted in the first steps towards a contract between the police
and residents to jointly combat crime and take responsibility for
their actions.
