Client: Redbridge Council
Creative: Interactive animated DVD, and illustrated fold-out magazine
Objectives
Redbridge Council approached Bold Creative to help them mediate as part of a community cohesion programme aimed at working with the young Muslim groups in the borough, to support, aid discussions and help challenge intergenerational misperceptions and alleviate gang tension.
Strategy
Bold initiated a series of workshops over 3 months with the targeted hard-to-reach groups exploring the issues they faced within their own circles of friends and the wider communities. The topics ranged from peoples perception of them, to their grievances and frustrations with authority figures and stereotypes that prevailed in their communities.
Creative Output
Bold worked with the youth to create an animated interactive DVD and magazine narrated and starring them as an educational resource for youth and community leaders.
Set on a railway station platform; the topics that the youth and the wider communities face were animated allowing the viewer to click through to hear the all the differing communities groups narrating their own points of view and discussing it together.
…”its not even gangs; it’s just a group of friends like 10 or 11”
The topics include; Police, Hoodies, Prejudice, Gangs and Respect.
“it’s quite a big group really isn’t it; you’re a bit intimidating…”
The illustrated fold-out magazine shows the members of the group and discusses the range of topics to support the DVD and help aid discussion and create wider talking points

• All the materials were produced in collaboration with the young people involved and has helped to develop their skills in design, film journalism and media
• The success of the outstanding UTurn material produced by the group has since developed into ‘lead’ workshops including schools and in local youth centers
