Client: Barts & The London NHS Trust
Creative: Patient Story short film
Objectives
Bold Creative were approached to help reinforce infection control methods in a drive to cut infection rates throughout the group’s hospitals including; The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, The London Chest Hospital in Bethnal Green and the St Barts’s Hospital in St Pauls.
The campaign was specifically targeted to ‘staff’ within the hospitals to encourage best practice and demonstrate the impact of correct and lapsed sanitary procedures during patient care.
Strategy
Bold worked closely with doctors, nurses and members of staff from the Infection Control Team as part of a thorough research and consultation period before creating a short film for staff training, to highlight the impact on a patient when procedures are carried out correctly and the dire consequences on individuals lives when procedures go wrong.
Output
A documentary film relays the very different experiences of Terry and Hugo; patients who both underwent similar heart bypass operations. Both patients candidly talk of their experiences to camera, from the first symptoms through to treatment and beyond.
Having gained a new lease on life and owing it to exlempatory NHS service; Terry was up, enjoying life and riding his bike along the canals with his grandson a month after the operation.
Hugo ended up back in hospital hooked to a machine with MRSA; he thought he was going to die, he lost his job and his savings, suffering mentally and physically; ending up a year later with his life and trust in the hospital system in shreds.
Wider Results
The Patients Story is now shown throughout Barts and The London NHS Trust Hospitals as part of the official induction to new nursing staff and has become an integral and well received part of the internal training scheme.
